Web 2.0 .. what's it all about? (private session 14Sept07)

This is a private presentation .. to all the staff at Concordia International School, Shanghai, on the morning of Friday 14th September ... 90 minutes

This session will be a general introduction to the new "Read-Write" web, (Web 2.0), we will look at what it is, what makes a web 2.0 website different from the more traditional ones.
We will also look at several examples and see how they might be used in teaching and learning.

One of the difficulties (challenges) for me is to judge exactly at what level to pitch the presentation ... do I assume participants are completely new to this topic (dangerous for me) or do I assume e.g. everyone is an accomplished Blogger?

So it would help me to better modify the presentation to your needs if you could leave a note below (it can be anonymous if you wish .. or give your name) by clicking on comments ... giving me some idea of your skill levels and also what you hope to gain from this presentation.

Presentation Tips
This session looks at some strategies to reduce the risks of "Death by PowerPoint" or "PowerPoint-less-ness" ... it will also highlight some of the newer online web 2.0 presentation options.

CS1: Podcasting Down and Dirty

In this session we will, in real time, create a Podcast, edit it, add some music convert to an mp3 format and host it at Podbean .... all in 45 minutes. (windowsXP)
In fact we may not even have time to fireup the PowerPoint so you might like to look at it before the event by clicking on this icon at the end of this post.
This session is the first in a series of 2 .... the second one is designed to build on what was learnt in the first (by me) and is being given by Wesley Fryer who will continue with this theme to take it on to the next level.

CS2: Podcasting Down and Dirty

CS3: Social Networks 101

In the last year Social (online) Networks have grown enormously in popularity with students around the world ... but these have not yet been adopted or used by many schools. In fact quite a number of schools around the world have blocked access on the school network to some of the social network websites like, 'myspace' and 'facebook'.

In this session we will look at what a social network site is and see some examples and discuss the pros and cons for a school community. We will also look at some ways of setting up your own social network for use with your class, school, or club .... or even outside work for your own family. (although you have probably alreayd used Ning as one of the organisational tools of the conference itself.

Finally in this session (time allowing) we will look at Second Life, a 3D virtual environment that is being considered as a possible tool to support teaching and learning, already half of UK Universities have a presence in S.L.

One of the outcomes of this session is that you may well pick up ideas for your own presentation back at school .... if presenting to colleagues on this topic in the future.

CS4: Second Life (3D Virtual Environment)

Second Life (S.L.) is an online 3D Virtual (Digital) World ... there are two areas that are full of virtual islands .... "The Main Grid" for those over the age of 18 and "The Teen Grid" for those ages 13-17.

Since opening to the public in 2003, it has grown explosively and today is inhabited by over 9 million residents from around the globe.

This session will look at what S.L. is, how to get your own avatar, how the main controls work ... but more importantly look at some of the opportunities for teaching and learning.

CS5: Captioning & Subtitling Online Videos

The ability to caption (add subtitles) to online videos can be a very powerful resource in most if not all curriculum areas, some that specifically come to mind are Modern Foreign Languages, ESL, SEN ... drat ... in fact the whole T&L experience.
We will look at several options to allow you (students) to do this easily.

One web 2.0 company set up to make it easy to do is dotSUB www.dotsub.com
where videos can be uploaded and captioned in any source language, and once captioned, be immediately available for subtitling into any other language.

In this session we will take a gentle tour around dotSUB to see how it works, we can also share ideas and suggestions about how this may be used in teaching and learning.
For part of this session we will be joined by Michael Smolens one of the co-founders of this web 2.0 company from New York (by Skype) .... so there will be an opportunity to ask him questions.
